A 33-year-old mother and her 1 year and 5 month old child were found dead inside their rented room in Sitio Nangka, Barangay Barrio Luz, Cebu City, on Thursday afternoon, July 17, 2025.
According to the investigation by the Mabolo Police Station, the mother and son recently moved to the area from Bogo City. An ID with the name “Laviña Mendoza,” which is now being used to confirm the mother's identity, was found inside the room.
The incident was discovered when the son of the homeowner went to the room to fix the electricity. He was concerned about the bad smell, so he sought help from barangay officials.
Along with a member, the barangay personnel forced open the door. They found the child dead and beginning to decompose, lying on the double-deck bed. While the mother was also found lifeless, hanging from a rope near the bed.
The police investigation is still ongoing to determine if foul play occurred or if this is a case of suicide and death by negligence.
