A 20-year-old prisoner in France escaped from Lyon-Corbas Prison after hiding inside the suitcase of a fellow prisoner who was about to be released. According to the report, he hid in his colleague's laundry bag and escaped the guards.
According to the prison administration, the prisoner is facing a organized crime case and his name has not been released. The administration admitted that there were major security lapses, which is why the prisoner was able to escape without realizing it.
Sébastien Cauwel, director of the prison administration, said it was a rare incident and the first time it had happened in the history of their agency. It is being investigated whether there were accomplices inside the prison.
The prison in Lyon-Corbas has also been found to be overcrowded. According to data as of May 1, there are 1,200 prisoners even though its capacity is only 678. This is also one of the prison issues that the Lyon Bar Association has long warned about.
It is currently being investigated how the prisoner got past security and whether there was feigned help from within. Authorities are continuing to work to find the escapee and ensure that this does not happen again.
