A 61-year-old male senior citizen was caught after stealing P80,000 from a fellow senior citizen inside a jeepney in Quiapo, Manila. The incident occurred on July 9, around 10 a.m. while the jeepney was traveling in Barangay 659-A, Ermita.
According to Lt. Col. Alfonso Saligumba III, chief of Police Station 5, the victim, a 79-year-old man, lost money after getting off at Carriedo Street. The money was inside a plastic bag and was placed in his pocket. Fortunately, a passenger saw the act of taking the money and helped the victim report it to the police.
In the CCTV footage, the suspect is seen riding a jeepney with the victim. In another video, he is also seen walking quickly and riding an e-trike. Police tracked him down at a mall in Quiapo the next day, July 10. He had not yet changed his clothes and the victim's purse was seized from him.
Instead of P80,000, only P40,500 was recovered. According to the suspect, he had already used the money for groceries and to pay off debts. He apologized for what he did. He admitted to the crime and said he was just desperate for money.
The suspect also has a previous case of theft, and is now facing another complaint of theft and illegal possession of a knife.
