The charred bones, which may be human bones, were found in Taal Lake on Thursday, July 10, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). According to Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano, the white sack containing bones was found near the beach during an inspection.
Clavano said, "This could be a big help in the investigation. A thorough forensic examination is still needed to determine if it is a human bone." The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) or the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will conduct the examination.
DNA testing will also be conducted to determine if the remains are related to the missing fishermen. It was noted that the sack was found close to the shore, so it is thought that it may have been thrown near the beach or drift away by the water.
The search operation began on Thursday morning and will be expanded on Friday, July 11. According to the Philippine Coast Guard, diving operations in the said area are ongoing.
Alleged whistleblower Julie Patidongan alias “Totoy” had previously spoken out, saying that the missing were killed and thrown into the lake. According to the Philippine Navy, they are ready to help if the DOJ asks for help.
