Senator Mark Villar has filed a bill to establish a Philippine Scam Prevention Center (PSPC). This is one of his 10 priority bills in the 20th Congress. The PSPC aims to serve as a help center for scam complaints and inquiries, especially now that fraud is rampant in the digital world.
According to Villar, as people's digital usage increases, the style of scammers is also changing. Therefore, it is important to have protection for every Filipino. One of his previous laws is the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act (AFASA), which aims to prevent fraud involving money.
The proposed PSPC would be placed under the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center and would collaborate with agencies such as the DTI, BSP, NTC, NPC, and even banks, telco companies, and online marketplaces. It also wants to establish local and regional offices to respond quickly to complaints.
The PSPC will assist in providing support to scam victims, especially in filing cases against violators of AFASA and Cybercrime Law. The goal of this center is to be an accessible and effective solution against online scams.
Villar added that this is a step towards a safer and more stable digital economy in the Philippines. “Through the PSPC, we can safeguard the money and savings of our countrymen, and we can establish a strong digital future,” he said.
