The family of Pastor Bong Chua, 54, is calling for justice after the tragic accident at NLEX-Marilao on June 18. Pastor Chua died after a large beam from a bridge fell on their AUV. Despite the tragedy, he managed to save his 2-year-old niece Jia by shielding her during the incident.
On the first night of the funeral in Parañaque, relatives and friends were filled with sadness and tears. According to Dianne Jaque, Chua's sister-in-law and Jia's mother, she clearly saw the falling beam, which was bigger than their car. Everything happened so quickly that it seemed like slow motion to her eyes as the car rolled.
Jani Chua, Pastor's wife, is currently recovering from a fractured leg and emotional trauma. She said Pastor Chua was her main companion during dialysis, taking care of her medicine, food, and daily needs. Now, she still cannot accept the sudden loss of her husband.
According to the local government of Marilao, the bridge is not owned by NLEX but by the provincial government. That's why they have requested the DPWH to make it part of the National Highway so that it can be funded and properly repaired. The LGU also admitted that it has been hit by trucks several times, making it dangerous for motorists.
The truck driver is still in custody and facing a case of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. The victims have not yet received full financial assistance for medicine and hills. The LGU of Marilao has promised to provide financial assistance while the investigation into the incident continues.
