The two customs brokers Wyeth Lara Navales and Leila Lara Navales were arrested by the Bureau of Customs-CIIS and NBI-AOTCD after being reported for extortion. The operation took place at a coffee shop in Ermita, Manila.
According to the complaint of Kenji Otsuka of Otsuka Freight Forwarders Co., Ltd., the brothers demanded P1.9 million from him in exchange for faster processing at Customs. He also allegedly gave P500,000 as “lubricant.”
Deputy Commissioner Juvymax Uy explained that the P500,000 was allegedly an engagement fee, which included broker’s fee and customs taxes. But when the shipment arrived, Wyeth allegedly said that it was on hold and that additional payment was required so that it would not be seized.
Customs Commissioner Bien Rubio condemned the illegal activities of the brokers and commended the swift action of the operatives. He assured that the two will be charged.
The Navales brothers are currently in the custody of the NBI and will be charged with Robbery with Violence or Intimidation by Way of Extortion.
