The Philippine government has suddenly cancelled the so-called ASRV visa, causing thousands of foreign investors, retirees, and families to lose their legal status. According to the Bureau of Immigration, this visa was never legal and was deemed an "abuse of power" with no legal basis.
The ASRV (Aurora Special Resident Visa) was allegedly established in 2019 by the Aurora Special Economic Zone (APECO) along with several agents. It was offered as a fast-track and unlimited visa in exchange for a fee starting at USD $50,000. Many foreigners, mostly from China, bought houses, did business, and settled in the Philippines using this visa.
But after the investigation, the government discovered that there was no presidential signature, no law, and no record of the ASRV with Immigration. Therefore all its holders were considered "illegal residents". There was also no transition period or refund given, so many investors lost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Immigration Warning: Brokers, law firms, and developers involved in the sale of ASRV will be investigated. Foreigners may be deported, fined, or blacklisted. If you are an ASRV holder, it is advisable to consult an immigration lawyer immediately and apply for a legal visa such as SRRV, 13(a), or work visa to avoid problems.
Experts' note: When investing in the Philippines, make sure the document is official, has government approval, and not just from agents or shortcuts. This way, you can avoid huge inconvenience and losses in the future.
