A Chinese tourist, Zhang Xiaohan, 30 years old, drowned off Kakaban Island, East Kalimantan, Indonesia on May 2. His GoPro camera fell while he was coming up from a scuba diving session.
According to the tour guide, Zhang was warned not to go back underwater. But he went down to retrieve the GoPro even though he was about 8 meters below the surface. He struggled to get up and was swept away by the strong current.
It was reported that the GoPro itself recorded his last moments. The group waited for him to resurface but did not see him, so he was reported missing around 9 a.m.
Soldiers and local groups from Basarnas sent a rescue team. His body was found the next day, 88 meters deep and far from where he came from. According to Endrow Sasmita from Basarnas, they had difficulty retrieving him because the water was too deep.
Zhang's body was taken to Abdul Rivai General Hospital in Berau for a post-mortem examination. Rescue teams coordinated and successfully found the victim.
