The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has rejected the proposal to increase the number of motorcycle taxis in Metro Manila.
According to LTFRB Chairman Atty. Teofilo Guadiz, if this is increased further, the income of drivers of public utility vehicles or PUVs will decrease. He said it will also disrupt the balance in traffic and the livelihood of other motorists.
He said the current limit of 45,000 motorcycle taxis in Metro Manila is sufficient. If this is increased further, traffic in the city could worsen.
Guadiz added that the increase in motor taxis could potentially affect the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP). Passengers may no longer support it if they choose motor taxis.
The LTFRB clarified that right now, this is not the right time to increase motorcycle taxis, especially if it will affect the livelihood of other transport workers.
