The daughter of the slain mayor of Rizal, Cagayan will run in the elections to replace her father. Jamila Ruma, 21 years old, is the eldest daughter of Mayor Joel Ruma who was assassinated on April 23 while on the campaign trail. She officially filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) on April 29 at the Comelec office in Rizal, coinciding with what would have been her father's 55th birthday.
Jamila is supported by many of her father's supporters. In a video by the Cagayan Provincial Information Office, people enthusiastically welcomed Jamila as she carried her COC and shouted “Still Ruma.” Her mother, Brenda Ruma, will also run as vice mayor.
According to the law, a deceased candidate can be replaced, as stated in National Act 881 or Omnibus Election Act. Jamila was allowed to be a substitute candidate for her late father.
Jamila shared her deep sadness and fear on the night of the incident. She said that after the campaign, most people had already said their goodbyes but her father chose to stay. While they were talking, he suddenly stood up and was shot there. Bullets rained down and they were unable to immediately take Mayor Joel to the hospital.
Rizal residents expressed their support and admiration for Jamila. According to voter Jonel Hermano, “Don’t underestimate Mayor Jamila. Age is not a criterion for true service — what matters is heart, purpose, and courage.”
