Former Kalibo mayor and president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI), Juan "Johnny" Dayang was shot dead inside his house in Kalibo, Aklan on Tuesday night. Dayang was 79 years old and a resident of Kalibo.
According to Kalibo police, Dayang was watching TV when the suspect, wearing a black jacket and helmet, arrived. The suspect hit her and shot her, before quickly fleeing on a motorcycle.
Dayang was immediately taken to the Aklan Provincial Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival by the doctor due to a bullet wound to her back. While the hot pursuit operation is underway, authorities are still investigating the identity of the suspect and the motive for the crime.
Johnny Dayang is known as a former columnist for Balita and Tempo under the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp. The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) condemned Dayang's death. According to Jose Torres Jr., Executive Director of PTFOMS, they sympathize with Dayang's family and continue to assist authorities to solve the case immediately.
