Philippines Faces 3 Major Challenges in ASEAN

The Philippines has officially assumed the role of ASEAN chairman from Malaysia. According to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., it is a great responsibility but also comes with great opportunities. In 2026, the country must prove that it can address three major issues that have long tested ASEAN unity.

First, the issue of the Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea. It has been under discussion for more than two decades but there is still no clear agreement. Marcos aims to conclude it by 2026, but many countries, including China, are not in favor of a legal agreement. While the Philippines is leading the talks, tensions between Manila and Beijing continue.

Second, the crisis in Myanmar. The military rule continues and ASEAN's plan to bring peace to the country has still failed. Marcos plans to coordinate with other leaders to forge unity before the elections in Myanmar in December. If there is no agreement, he said the Philippines will act alone for peace.

Third, the economic challenge due to the trade dispute between the United States and China. Marcos believes that ASEAN should work together to maintain the stability of the region's economy. Despite pressure from major countries, the Philippines sees an opportunity to strengthen ASEAN ties and maintain balance in global trade.

These challenges will test the Philippine leadership as the ASEAN chairman. But according to Marcos, he will remain positive and determined to promote peace, development, and unity in the region.
