The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has confirmed that a Filipino seafarer died following the Houthi attack on the Dutch cargo ship Minervagracht in the Gulf of Aden on September 29.
According to DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, the Filipino was initially critically injured but passed away a few days after the incident. He expressed condolences to the deceased's family via social media.
Philippine officials are flying to Djibouti along with the seafarer's wife and brother to meet with the ship's owner and arrange for the repatriation of his remains to the Philippines.
Another Filipino seafarer is currently recovering from his wounds, while 10 Filipino crew members returned home to Manila last week.
The ship was hit by a projectile that caused a fire. According to the Houthi rebels, their attack on the commercial ships was in support for the Palestinians amid the war in Gaza.
