Japan Airlines has apologized after delaying three flights due to a drunk pilot. The incident occurred on August 28, after the pilot drank too much in Hawaii and missed his flight to Nagoya. One of the flights was delayed for up to 18 hours.
On the same day, the Ministry of Transport summoned the airline's chief safety officer and issued a warning letter. This is the second reprimand in a year. In December, the airline implemented an alcohol ban for flight crew on overnight stays after a similar incident in Melbourne.
According to Japan Airlines President Mitsuko Tottori, they will further strengthen alcohol and health checks of staff. Transport Minister Hiromasa Nakano also expressed disappointment over the repeated incidents. Safety and discipline are the airline's main focus to prevent similar incidents in the future.
