Caloocan City was declared a state of calamity on Thursday, July 24, after severe flooding affected about 50,000 families. According to Vice Mayor Karina Teh, the City Council approved Resolution 4602 to implement the declaration.
Heavy rain and flooding were caused by four weather systems: southwest monsoon and typhoons “Crising,” “Dante,” and “Emong.” Although the typhoons are no longer in the Philippine Area of Responsibility, they still exacerbated the flooding.
Based on data from the Caloocan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (CDRRMD), 46 barangays were severely affected. Because of this, they recommended declaring a state of calamity to immediately use the quick response fund and expedite the provision of assistance.
According to Mayor Along Malapitan, “The provision of aid and the repair of damaged infrastructure in the city will be faster.”
Caloocan is the eighth city in Metro Manila to declare a state of calamity due to ongoing flooding.
