A heavy police presence was seen in the area after two firefighters were shot and killed while trying to put out a blaze in northern Idaho, authorities said Sunday. Sniper fire is still ongoing and the search for the perpetrator is ongoing.
It is not yet clear whether there was one or multiple people shot, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff. It is possible that civilians were also involved in the incident, which took place in a nature area in Coeur d'Alene.
The shooting occurred in the Canfield Mountain nature area, a popular hiking spot near Coeur d'Alene, a city of 57,000 people located 420 km east of Seattle, Washington.
Firefighters first received a call about the fire at 1:21 p.m.. 40 minutes later, a report came in that they were being shot at while working.
The investigation is ongoing while the search for those responsible for the violence continues.
