Volkswagen has restored a 1977 T2 Bus known as “Azul,” an iconic van that survived the Palisades Fire in California in 2025. It was photographed by the AP standing among burning houses in Malibu—barely damaged. For this reason, it has been nicknamed the “magic bus.”
Owner Megan Krystle Weinraub was thrilled when Volkswagen offered to fix up her beloved van. It was taken to the Oxnard Engineering Campus, where it is part of the VW collection. At first glance it looked fine, but upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the interior and underside of the bus needed extensive repairs.
The restoration is currently underway and is expected to be completed this year. This is part of VW's support for California communities affected by the fires. Earlier this year, they also donated to the California Fire Foundation for firefighters and their families.
According to Rachael Zaluzec, Senior VP of Marketing for Volkswagen Group of America, “When Azul returns to the road, it will once again bring the message of hope and wonder.”
