A 49-year-old man from South Korea reportedly crashed his car into the sea, killing his wife and two children. According to police, he was under a lot of stress due to debts that amounted to ₩160 million or more than ₱6.5 million.
Ji, a rebar foreman at construction sites, had difficulty paying workers and had his contracts with several companies affected—the reason for his debt.
The investigation began when Ji's youngest child failed to show up for class. Police traced the family's cellphone to Jindo Port, where CCTV footage showed the vehicle heading into the sea.
Before the tragedy, Ji took his family on a trip to Muan County. According to the report, he allegedly gave his wife and children sleeping pills disguised as food supplements. He jumped out of the driver’s seat window and fled.
Ji and his accomplice Kim, 49, who helped them escape in another vehicle, were caught. Both were arrested on Monday, and Ji is scheduled to appear in court in Gwangju on June 4.
