Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced its latest project, Overwatch Rush, a standalone mobile game that will take the popular hero shooter franchise in a new direction. It is available on iOS and Android, and features 4v4 gameplay that is different from the main version of the game. The new title aims to reimagine fast-paced, team-based combat for a more portable and accessible mobile experience.
This is not a simple port from PC or console. Overwatch Rush is designed as a “top-down hero shooter”, where the camera angle is from above instead of a first-person view. This allows for clearer battlefield awareness and better fit with touchscreen controls. The battles are also more condensed due to the 4v4 format, compared to the traditional 5v5 structure of the mainline game, but the intensity and strategy that fans have come to expect remain.
The game still features some fan-favorite heroes such as Tracer, Soldier: 76, Reinhardt, Reinhardt class="whitespace-normal">Reaper, Mercy, and Lucio, with skills and controls reworked to be simpler and more responsive on mobile devices. According to the company, development is being led by a dedicated internal team, to ensure that the core Overwatch studio can continue to focus on the main game. An official release date announcement is expected to follow, while the game will use a free-to-play model in line with the franchise's current strategy.
