Apple has officially acquired the full rights to the sci-fi thriller 'Severance', from Season Five, for $70 million USD. Under Apple Studios, the show will be an in-house project, giving it greater control over production and budget. This move ensures the continuing life of the series after the heavy costs of the second season.
The move is in response to the growing financial pressures experienced by the Fifth Season. According to reports, the cost of Season 2 reached nearly $20 million USD per episode due to strikes and delays, which caused cash flow issues for the New York-based production. By bringing the IP to its own studio, Apple has more control over the budget and schedule, while also giving Season Five the opportunity to return as executive producer without a heavy financial burden.
Looking ahead, the acquisition opens up ambitious plans for the franchise. Production for the long-awaited Season 3 is scheduled for Summer 2026. Additionally, Season 4 is considered “locked” in Apple's plans, while considering possible prequels, spinoffs, and international adaptations to maintain the Severance universe between seasons.
Creators Ben Stiller and Dan Erickson are open to expanding the story, with the possibility of new characters and story side plots. This move not only demonstrates Apple's dedication to the show, but also gives fans the opportunity to deepen their experience in the world of Lumon Industries.
Currently, Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Apple TV+, and Season 3 is expected in Summer 2026. The acquisition of full rights clearly reinforces Apple's position as a leader in the entertainment industry, poised to take Severance to a higher level and a wider audience around the world.
