A passenger ferry sank in the waters off Basilan, leaving 18 people dead and 24 missing, according to a report by the Philippine Coast Guard. Authorities immediately launched rescue operations despite rough waves and variable weather conditions.
According to initial investigations, 317 passengers were rescued after the MV Trisha Kerstin 3 malfunctioned around 1:30 a.m. while en route to Jolo, Sulu from Zamboanga City. The ship was carrying 332 passengers and 27 crew members when a truck fell inside the vessel, which is believed to have caused it to quickly list and sink.
Based on the survivors' accounts, strong waves hit the ship, causing it to suddenly take on water. rescue assets, including vessels and coordination from various agencies and local governments in Basilan, were immediately dispatched to expand the search for the missing.
Authorities also confirmed that the ship was not overloaded when it left port. search and recovery operations are ongoing, and the possibility that victims may have been swept to nearby shores by the current is not being ruled out.
The government has ordered immediate help and aid for the affected families, including food, medical attention, and psychosocial support for the survivors. It also extended sympathy to the bereaved as a thorough investigation continues to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
