Globe x Starlink: Direct to Cell tech for the Philippines 2026

Globe has transformed the telecommunications landscape in the Philippines with its partnership with Starlink to launch Direct to Cell technology, a historic step for the region. For the first time in Southeast Asia, it is possible to directly connect standard LTE smartphones to satellites, without the need for new hardware or additional cell towers.

With Direct to Cell, a clear view of the sky is enough to get a signal. This means that subscribers can use their current Globe SIM, as the connection is powered by the satellite network. However, the technology has limitations—it won't work indoors or in areas with dense trees blocking the sky.

This will be of great benefit to remote and rural communities, especially in so-called signal dead zones such as mountainous areas. In provinces with few cell towers, this technology becomes a bridge to strengthen basic communications for safety, work, and daily needs.

This move also highlights the Philippines' leadership in the region when it comes to telco innovation. The early deployment demonstrates Globe's clear goal to deliver innovative solutions and expand connectivity for more Filipinos.

The service is expected to launch in the first quarter of the year, and while it won't be free, Globe has assured that it will be affordable. The focus is clear: to give voice and connection to areas long unreached by traditional signals—a step toward a more inclusive and connected nation.
