It's been reported that OpenAI is developing Sweetpea, a ChatGPT-powered earbuds designed to be a serious competitor to AirPods. This isn't just an audio accessory—the goal is to move AI from the screen to an always-on wearable that can accompany the user all day, with a clear focus on voice, calls, and real-time assistance.
According to reports, the Sweetpea will feature a behind-the-ear design with pill-shaped modules and a main body with a metal appearance. Inside, it is expected to feature a smartphone-class chip and custom silicon for faster voice processing and phone actions. This strategy suggests deeper integration of AI commands, not just for music but also for everyday tasks.
Sweetpea is part of a broader hardware vision associated with Sam Altman and Jony Ive, which aims to build a family of devices for ambient computing. In partnership with Foxconn, the intention is clear: to make ChatGPT a constant and natural presence in people's lives—a move that could set a new standard in AI wearables and consumer tech.
