Meralco implemented a reduction in electricity rates this January, with a reduction of P0.1637 per kilowatt-hour, bringing the total rate down to P12.9508 per kWh. According to the company, the reduction is a result of lower generation and transmission charges, even though some cost components remained under upward pressure.
Meanwhile, the prices of petroleum products are expected to increase today. This includes an additional P0.20 per liter for diesel and P0.30 per liter for gasoline and kerosene. Industry sources point out that geopolitical tensions, including supply issues from the Middle East and Europe, are driving the increase in global oil prices.
For average consumers, the reduction in electricity charges is equivalent to approximately P33 reduction in monthly bill for a consumption of 200 kWh. Meralco clarified that the distribution charge remains unchanged, while taxes and pass-through charges are passed directly to the respective agencies and power providers, maintaining transparency in electricity charges.
