Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, has passed tougher gun laws after 15 people were killed at Bondi Beach. The suspected gunmen were said to have targeted a Hanukkah event, in what is being called a terrorist and antisemitic attack.
The new law would limit the number of guns a person can own to four, and ten for exempted individuals such as farmers. The law also prohibits the display of “terrorist symbols,” including the Islamic State flag seen on one of the suspects’ vehicles.
The NSW government will also investigate tougher hate speech legislation, while the federal government has planned a gun buyback and a review of police and intelligence services. The move is part of ensuring such a tragedy never happens again.
