2025, One of the Most Damaging Years in the Philippines

The Philippines has gone through one of the most disastrous years in history, according to DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian. At the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum, he said a series of typhoons, earthquakes, and other disasters have hit the country, leaving hundreds of people dead.

Gatchalian emphasized the important role of the DSWD production centers in Pasay and Cebu, which quickly deliver relief goods during disasters. He said they can produce 25,000 family food packs per day, but a resource center in Mindanao is needed because “speed is key in disasters.”

Gatchalian also reminded that the Philippines, which is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, is still among the top five most disaster-prone countries in the world. Because of this, he hopes that the DSWD budget will be increased by P32 billion to support programs such as the 4Ps and Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations.

According to the report of the Office of Civil Defense, more than 200 people died in Typhoon Tino, while about 30 died in Uwan. The 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Cebu killed more than 70 people and destroyed nearly 185,900 houses. Typhoon Verbena also caused widespread damage, affecting more than 275,000 people, evacuating thousands, and suspending many schools and classes.

The DSWD continues to be under Code Blue and continues to distribute FFPs, hygiene kits, and ready-to-eat meals. In Negros, they distributed 10,000 food packs, while in Caraga, they provided food to those stranded. The agency assured that they will remain prepared as Typhoon Verbena moves in the West Philippine Sea and approaches the Kalayaan Islands.
