A massive fire has destroyed several residential blocks in Tai Po, Hong Kong, resulting in four deaths and several injuries, according to a government statement on Wednesday.
Fires quickly spread through the bamboo scaffolding of at least three buildings in Wang Fuk Court, before reaching other parts of the apartments. Several residents were reportedly trapped inside as the flames rose.
The Hong Kong government confirmed that four people died, including a firefighter. Two were in critical condition, while one was in stable condition. A man and a woman were taken to hospital with severe burns.
Thick smoke was seen coming from the scaffolding of the buildings, as authorities declared a four-alarm fire, the second highest level. As a result, parts of the nearby highway were closed.
The Fire Services Department advised residents to stay indoors, close windows, and avoid the area. Last month, four people were also injured in a separate scaffolding fire in Hong Kong's central business district.
