Malacañang said on Thursday, November 20, that if some anti-government rallies are proven to be foreign-funded, it would be treason.
Some protests against corruption in the government have raised suspicions that there are groups that want to destabilize the government. Many are calling for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and some are demanding his resignation.
According to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, the AFP and police are investigating whether there was foreign funding in the protests. “If the investigation shows that the rally was foreign-funded, we can say it is treason,” Castro said.
AFP spokesperson Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad also said that the funds are likely domestic, so they are looking into all possibilities regarding the source of the money.
Malacañang has insisted that it is not right for foreign countries to interfere in Philippine politics, and continues to investigate all leads regarding the protest fund.
