The well-known politician and former ally of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., Juan Ponce Enrile, has passed away at the age of 101, according to his son on Thursday.
Enrile is a Harvard-trained lawyer and served in government for more than six decades under eight presidents, including President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., where he served as presidential legal counsel until his death.
His career began under Marcos Sr. as secretary of defense. He was one of the key figures during the Martial Law of 1972, one of the darkest periods in Philippine history, known for human rights violations and restrictions on freedoms.
In 1986, Enrile broke with Marcos Sr.'s regime and withdrew his support, marking the beginning of the People Power Revolution that restored democracy under President Corazon Aquino.
Enrile's passing brings to an end over 60 years of political service, a career filled with controversy, loyalty, and political changes in the country.
