400 families from two coastal barangays in Manila were evacuated to the Delpan Evacuation Center on Monday night, November 10, due to strong waves and rising water.
According to the Manila Department of Social Welfare, 200 families or almost 2,000 people from Barangay 20 in Isla Puting Bato and 200 families from Barangay 275 in Parola, Binondo were affected—both flood-prone areas along Manila Bay.
Preemptive evacuations began in the afternoon, but many only left when the floodwaters and strong waves reached their homes around 6:30 p.m. Some 60 tents were set up at the evacuation center for larger families, and mats, blankets, and hot meals were provided.
Most of the evacuees live in wooden houses built over the water on Isla Puting Bato, while others in Parola are closer to the shore. One of them is Lydia Olimberio, 85, who left her small house when the strong waves began to batter her.
Authorities are continuing to monitor other residents who may need to evacuate due to high tides. Evacuees are advised to ensure their safety before returning to their homes.
