Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-Wong) has claimed four lives in the Philippines as authorities begin assessing the damage. Many areas in Luzon have been affected by strong winds, rain, and high waves.
More than a million people were evacuated before Uwan hit on Sunday. “We couldn’t sleep because of the wind hitting the metal roof and the falling trees,” said Romeo Mariano, who was staying with his grandmother in Isabela. When they came out, they saw the damage to their house.
Two children died after being buried in a house due to a landslide in Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya. Two others died from drowning and falling debris. Four towns in Aurora were also affected by the landslide.
Uwan continues to rotate northeastward and is expected to hit Taiwan. Its winds have decreased to 130–160 kph (₱6,800–₱8,400 per second energy estimate), but remain strong and may cause heavy rain and storm surge along the coast.
This is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, following Typhoon Kalmaegi (Tino) which killed 224 people. An evacuation order has also been issued in Guangfu, Taiwan, in preparation for the approaching typhoon.
