TV5 cameraman Mac Ortiz was praised after reporting live on Typhoon Uwan in Albay, Bicol. This was his first time facing the camera to report, instead of just behind it.
While waiting for questions from news anchors Ed Lingao and Gretchen Ho, Ortiz first read from his phone. Lingao noticed his nervousness and encouraged him to report as if they were just talking about the weather while drinking beer.
“First time, first time,” Ortiz began with a nervous smile. With Lingao's support, Ortiz relaxed and delivered the report smoothly.
Both Ho and Lingao praised Ortiz on social media. They cited his skills in shooting, video editing, drone operation, and now live reporting. Other reporters also praised Ortiz's courage, especially since it was his first time reporting live and there was no second take.
Ortiz became an inspiration to his fellow media workers because he showed that a cameraman can also be a reporter in times of need.
