The Land Transportation Office (LTO) supports the plan to make e-bike registration mandatory nationwide. With the rapid increase in e-bikes, there is also a growing call for better regulation of their use.
E-bike sales have increased in the Philippines because electricity costs are cheaper compared to gasoline. Many people also use them because they do not require a license or registration, making them the favorite vehicle for many Filipinos in the city and province.
But due to the lack of strict laws, there have been road safety problems. Untrained children are often seen riding e-bikes, violating traffic laws, and sometimes even entering highways.
According to LTO Executive Director Atty. Greg Pua, e-bikes must be registered so that they have unique identification such as chassis and motor number, so that they can be assigned a plate number. This way, it will also be easier to identify violators of the law.
The LTO is still awaiting an official directive from the Department of Transportation, but it is clear that their goal is to make the use of e-bikes safer and more efficient throughout the country.
