US President Donald Trump has said China does not want to invade Taiwan. He expressed confidence in the good relationship he has with Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom he will see at a meeting in South Korea this month.
Trump was asked about a Pentagon report that Xi may be targeting 2027 to take over Taiwan, a self-governing country claimed by China. Trump said, "We're fine with China. They don't want to do that."
Trump emphasized that the American military is strong and that no country wants to compete with it. He said, “We have the best military equipment. No one is going to mess with that.”
He added that he believes his relationship with Xi will be good on Taiwan and other issues. He said his goal is to achieve a fair trade agreement with China. He declined to say whether he would be willing to sacrifice support for Taiwan in exchange for an agreement.
