Arturo Gatti Jr., son of the late boxing legend Arturo Gatti, has died at the age of 17, according to his trainer Moe Latif. "This is not a joke or a rumor. Arturo is gone," Latif said in an Instagram story. He asks that no one disturb him for now.
Gatti's father's former bodyguard, Chuck Zito, offered his condolences to the family. "My condolences to the family of Arturo Gatti Sr.—to his mother, siblings, and his daughter Sophia," he said.
Gatti Jr. lived in Mexico with his mother, Amanda Rodrigues. Authorities are still investigating the cause of his death. His body was reportedly found in a neighbor's apartment.
Gatti Jr. grew up loving boxing and became an amateur boxer. When he died, a video of him training with Mike Tyson went viral. His dream was to compete in the Olympics before turning professional. He was scheduled to fight professionally in Mexico on June 14, but he was not included on the fight card.
The boxing world and fans also offered their condolences. “Arturo Gatti Jr. is sadly missed, although still young, his spirit will live on and he will be reunited with his father in heaven,” the WBA said.
