Some areas in the Philippines have announced class and government suspensions on Thursday, September 25, due to heavy rains and flooding caused by Severe Tropical Storm Opong. Some areas are under Wind Signal No. 2, while Metro Manila and other regions are under Wind Signal No. 1.
The typhoon is about to hit Bicol and Eastern Visayas, and is expected to become a typhoon upon landfall on September 26. Opong has strengthened further due to warm and comfortable ocean conditions.
For Metro Manila, several cities have suspensions: Quezon City – Child Development Centers and Kindergartens; Valenzuela City – all levels in in-person classes; Taguig, Malabon, Pasig, and Caloocan – some levels and day care centers. In Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol, and Eastern Visayas, many provinces also have no school and some areas have shifted to online or modular learning.
To parents and students, be prepared for heavy rain, flooding, and possible landslides in high areas. Avoid going out unless necessary and follow updates from local government.
