The Alas Pilipinas made history after defeating No. 21 Egypt, 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, in the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena. This was the country’s first win in the prestigious tournament and its first time winning a set and a match on the world stage.
Bryan Bagunas led the way with 25 points, including 23 powerful spikes. Leo Ordiales also stepped up, scoring 21 points, while Marck Espejo added 13 points with clever drop shots. According to Bagunas, “This is the best game of our lives.”
Before the start, the FIVB gave the Philippines only a 9% chance to win against Egypt with a 91% chance. But the Nationals turned it around and brought great joy to thousands of fans at the venue.
Following the victory, Alas Pilipinas will face Iran (No. 14) in the next match. If they succeed again, there is a high possibility that the team will advance to the round of 16, a dream that is now within reach.
The victory over Egypt is not just a win on the scoreboard, but a symbol of the courage, confidence, and heart of the Filipino players who are ready to fight for the country's flag.
