Firefighters in Davao City rescued a 13-year-old Shih Tzu named Oddy after he was trapped for nearly 30 minutes inside a burning house in Barangay Paciano Bangoy on Wednesday night.
In the video, water was poured on the dog, which suffered burns and was having difficulty breathing due to smoke and carbon monoxide. It was immediately taken to the Davao Emergency Veterinary Hospital where Dr. Ronald Lunar said the dog arrived shock and gasping for air.
Oddy is currently on oxygen therapy and his heart, breathing, and organs are being closely monitored. According to Dr. Lunar, it will take about three days before the effects of carbon monoxide toxicity are completely gone.
He added that the mortality rate of carbon monoxide inhalation in humans and animals is high, so critical monitoring is very important. For now, he said, “By God’s grace, he is okay but he still needs continuous oxygen therapy from 24 hours to 3 days.”
Despite the danger, Oddy continues to fight for life while under the close watch of veterinarians.
