The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has warned beneficiaries of the aid not to use it for gambling. According to the agency, the funds provided are for public needs and should not be wasted on any form of gambling.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian warned that violators may be disqualified and removed from the program, especially if cash aid continues to be misused. Implementers were also directed to ensure strict monitoring and prompt action on complaints of violations.
DSWD has various cash aid programs. Under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS), those in need can receive medical, educational, transportation, food, material, or cash assistance. There is also the Ayuda para sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP) for minimum and below-minimum wage earners, which provides one-time cash aid of up to ₱10,000.
Also included is the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) which provides conditional cash grants to poor families, especially farmers, fisherfolk, the homeless, and families with pregnant women or children under 18 years of age. There are also programs for indigent senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and the unemployed.
Gatchalian said all DSWD cash aid programs are geared towards helping Filipinos in marginalized sectors and alleviating poverty. This statement comes in the wake of intensified action against online gambling and possible stricter regulations from Congress.
