A German doctor, Johannes M., 40, is now facing trial after being accused of murdering 15 patients from 2021 to 2024 in Berlin. According to investigators, he murdered 12 women and 3 men by lethal injection and in some cases even burned down the victims' homes to hide the evidence.
According to the prosecution, Johannes M. pretended to be a caregiver but actually intended to kill patients in their homes. He took advantage of their trust as a doctor and allegedly acted as if he "had control over life and death."
Johannes M. was found after a coworker became suspicious when he noticed a series of patient deaths in the fire. Initially, only four cases were filed against him, but the ongoing investigation uncovered more suspicious deaths—including that of his mother-in-law in Poland.
According to reports, he used a muscle relaxant that paralyzes the patient's breathing and causes death within minutes. In five cases, he even set fire to the victim's house after the murder. In one incident, he killed two people in one day.
Johannes M. has no clear motive other than murder. He is scheduled to face 35 hearings until 2026, and the prosecution is expected to ask for life imprisonment. The case is comparable to that of the notorious nurse Niels Hoegel, who was also convicted of murdering 85 patients.
