Officers of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) have arrested a Filipina who was lured to work in a scam hub in Cambodia.
According to the report, Chinese recruiters on Telegram offered him $1,000 in exchange for working for an online gaming company. He was caught by immigration officers on June 23 while on his way to Hong Kong.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said that this incident shows a new method of human traffickers using online platforms to defraud.
The victim has been referred to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for assistance and to prosecute the recruiters.
Meanwhile, three more victims who were supposed to be leaving for Albania were also intercepted at NAIA Terminal 3. Recruiters promised them wages of up to 700 euros per month as housekeeping attendants, factory workers, and waiters, but after they paid ₱34,000 to ₱74,000, they were blocked online.
