The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority or MMDA recently met with the motorcycle community to discuss issues such as the No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP), motorcycle lane rules, and traffic violations. One of the hotly debated areas is MC Lane on Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City.
Many riders complained that their trips took longer, adding up to an hour during rush hour. In addition, they said MC Lane is dangerous because they seem to be packed like sardines, posing the risk of accidents even if there is a small mistake.
MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes proposed dividing MC Lane into 3 to 4 lanes to ensure safer and smoother traffic flow. Another option is to reduce the 5-meter bike lane by half to widen the motorcycle lane.
The MMDA has four options: first, reduce the bike lane and widen the MC Lane. Second, move the MC Lane closer to the MRT-7 and use the lane for private vehicles. Third, completely remove the bike lane to make way for the PUV and MC Lane. Fourth, divide the bike lane and give half to MC taxi and courier riders while other riders will still use the old MC Lane.
The MC Lane was reinstated in 2023, and over 1,300 violations were recorded on the first day. The MMDA clarified that big bikes with 400cc and above are not covered by the MC Lane rule.
