The tragic accident occurred on Monday, June 9, in northern Malaysia. A bus carrying university students crashed into a minivan. At least 15 people were killed—14 were students and one was a bus attendant. Thirteen died on the spot, while two others died in hospital.
Thirty-three people were injured, seven of whom are in critical condition. According to authorities, most of the victims were aged 21 to 23 years old. The students were reportedly returning from vacation due to an Islamic public holiday and were returning to their university.
According to a student's account, he smelled burning rubber before the collision. “The ride was going smoothly, until suddenly I smelled what looked like burning brakes,” said Wan Muhammad Hanifah Wan Azman, a 22-year-old animation student.
The Perak State Police said the bus possibly lost control and hit the minivan from behind. Some people were able to get out, some were thrown, and some were trapped inside the bus.
Some of the injured have been discharged from the hospital, according to police, but there is no exact number of those still being treated. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing as the entire community expresses its condolences to the bereaved.
