Many people want to quit vaping, but there is little clear guidance on how to do it effectively. A new report by health experts reveals that there are two methods that appear to be most effective right now: text message programs and the drug varenicline.
The text-based program This Is Quitting has been proven to be especially helpful for youth and young adults. It sends daily tips and support via text message, to guide you as you gradually quit vaping. Simple but effective—it increased the chances of quitting vaping by 30%.
Another promising option is the drug varenicline (Chantix). It works by blocking the “rewarding” effects of nicotine in the brain. Those who tried it were twice as likely to quit vaping compared to those who did not take the drug.
While vaping is safer than smoking, it's still not safe, especially if you've never smoked before. It's still better not to vape and not to smoke. So if you want to quit, seek help from a health provider or call stop-smoking services. Remember, it's okay to fail on your first try—the important thing is to try again.
Current studies are still ongoing, so more more effective methods may emerge in the years to come. But if you want to start making a difference now, you can start with text support or consultation for medication.
