Rep. Jonathan Keith Flores' proposal: Remove general education or GE subjects from college so that students are better prepared for their course or profession. Instead of just bringing back the three GE subjects in senior high school, they should eliminate them all within five years or sooner.
According to Flores, students would benefit more if GE were replaced with specialized subjects and longer internships. He said the internship could be increased by 90 to 120 days to make graduates more competitive.
He also said that high school lessons are only repeated in college. Therefore, GE is no longer needed in college. Flores added that GE teachers can be transferred to senior high schools or they can just conduct research or community work.
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian also commented, saying it would be better to shorten college than completely abolish K-12. He said it would be a waste of students' time and money to just repeat what they learned in senior high school.
Amidst these proposals, the issue of whether the current education system in the Philippines is even effective has been revived.
