People picnicking at the Tapwakan River in Pugo, La Union were shocked when the water suddenly rose and became stronger at around two o'clock in the afternoon, on May 6, 2025. According to one of them, Bel Baldemor, while they were taking a bath, they noticed the color of the water changed so they immediately went up.
A few moments later, the water suddenly rushed and deepened. As a result, the river guards sounded a siren as a warning and advised people to get out of the water immediately.
Eight needed irescue, including a woman who can be seen in the video struggling to get out due to the strong current. Pugo MDRRMO personnel responded immediately and rescued people trapped in the middle and on the sides of the river.
According to Bel, they wondered why this happened because the mist was only light and no rain fell in the area. But since the source of the river is in the mountains, it is possible that the heavy rain fell there.
The incident is a reminder to be alert and careful in such areas, especially when there is rain in the mountains even if it is not felt below.
