4 Filipinos Missing in Myanmar; Death Toll Reaches 1,000+

More than 1,000 people died after a strong earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand on March 28. According to official Myanmar government data, 1,002 were dead, 2,376 were injured, and 30 were missing, including 4 Filipinos.

According to DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, there are no confirmed Filipino deaths or injuries in Thailand, but there are four Filipinos still missing in Myanmar. The missing are a couple and two other individuals, among the 600 registered Filipinos in the country.

The Philippine Embassy in Myanmar continues to search and contact for missing Filipinos. De Vega urged the public to not spread false information about the missing.

Strong Earthquake, High Risk

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake had its epicenter in Sagaing, Myanmar, which was immediately followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock. Many buildings collapsed and roads were damaged, especially in Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the death toll could reach 10,000 due to the extent of the damage.

In Thailand, 10 confirmed dead in Bangkok, where a 30-story building collapsed. 100 more are missing and may be trapped under the rubble.

Myanmar Asks for International Help

Given the severity of the damage, the junta government of Myanmar has requested international aid—a rare step by a military government. India and China have already sent relief goods, while the USA has pledged assistance.

Despite the tragedy, no Filipino in Thailand or Myanmar has yet requested shelter or repatriation from the Philippine government. rescue and relief operations are ongoing in both countries to save possible survivors.
