Twenty-two police officers in Lamitan City, Basilan were placed under restrictive custody after being linked to the alleged hazing of approximately one hundred new recruits. Authorities said a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the responsibility of each involved.
In total, eight of those involved were commissioned officers while fourteen were non-commissioned officers. Twelve of them, including a force commander of RMFB-14B, are facing charges under the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018, based on the affidavits and medical certificates of the victims.
Apart from those taken into custody, 55 more personnel were temporarily removed from their duties, bringing the total number of police officers under investigation to 77. The leadership clarified that relief does not automatically mean physical harm, but is part of administrative safeguards while the process is underway.
The victims also underwent medical examinations, and some were advised to rest for up to nine days due to contusions and hematomas. Officials assured that no one is in critical condition, and the reported dizziness may be related to the combined physical activity and the incident.
The management emphasized a zero-tolerance policy against any form of hazing. Anyone found involved—whether in planning or actual hazing—will face administrative and criminal charges, including possible dismissal from service and punishment under Republic Act 11053.
