The incident went viral on social media where a motorcycle rider was seen not immediately yielding the way to a firetruck responding to a fire on Araneta Street, Bacolod City. Despite the firetruck driver's continuous honking and shouting, it took a long time for the motorcycle to pull over, delaying the firefighters' immediate response.
Because of this, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) immediately took action to investigate the incident. The agency identified the owner and driver of the motorcycle, and gave them five days to appear and explain. Initial investigation also revealed that the driver of the motorcycle did not have a license at the time of the incident.
According to the LTO, the law clearly states that all motorists are obligated to give way to emergency vehicles such as firetrucks. Failure to comply with this may be considered reckless driving, in addition to other possible violations. The agency reminds that road discipline is important not only to avoid fines, but also to save lives in times of disaster.
